Welcome!
"All the world is a laboratory to the inquiring mind."
-Martin H. Fischer
Dear All,
I proudly present to you a portfolio of my progress in an undergraduate education course, Language & Literacy, as well as a glimpse of my journey to becoming an effective biology and science teacher of secondary education. Literacy is traditionally defined as the ability to read and write, but should not be confined to an English Language Arts classroom. Literacy in science is crucial to comprehending material, making connections and understanding procedures.
My goal as an educator is to open the minds (and the hearts) of students to science and awaken their critical thinking and problem solving skills. Inquiry is the recommended pedagogy. Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it gave life to the scientist. As you will see in my lesson plans, students will be expected to ask questions and answer questions. This is due to the nature of the scientific method, on which I base my lessons.
The lesson plans in this portfolio revolve around a specific theme - fear - in which other subject areas, english, psychology and physical education have teamed up with biology to enforce learning and allow learners to make connections. They are designed for eighth grade students but can easily be adapted to other levels. I hope you enjoy them, as I have enjoyed creating them!
Sincerely,
Elira Brucaj
